She danced through the halls,

her feet barely making a sound.

In the kitchen,

she hummed as she cooked.

Her favorite spot

was in the living room,

by the fireplace.

She got cold easily.

There were hundreds of books

on poetry and adventures.

She had read every one.

But one day

while he was watching her

he blinked

and she,

all in an instant,

disappeared.

Inspired by Ann Beattie’s “Save a Horse, Ride a Cowgirl” and its protagonist Bradley. In it, he remembers his wife and the ghost stories he heard throughout his time serving in Vietnam.
